2023: A Year of Challenge and Change for Ocala Food Forest

Last year was pivotal for Ocala Food Forest, marked by unexpected challenges that have reshaped our operations for 2024. The most significant setback came last summer when I was injured by a drunk driver. This incident not only impacted my health but also resulted in the total loss of the work van I used to transport plants—sadly, it's now confined to the junkyard, R.I.P.

As a result of these events, many of our plants were lost because I couldn't plant or tend to them properly during my recovery. However, I'm back on my feet now and have made substantial progress in reviving the food forest. I've managed to plant most of the surviving nursery stock, and I've also started propagating new plants.

My mobility has improved, and I've been able to dedicate more time to the garden. This year, I'm shifting our focus from buying wholesale to expanding our own propagation efforts. This means fewer purchases and more in-house growth, emphasizing plant trades to diversify our collection with more food forest species, Florida natives, and Florida-friendly plants.

Another exciting project for 2024 involves repairing and rebuilding an old trailer frame that's been sitting in our yard. This will be crucial for transporting plants, soil, rocks, and mulch, supporting the ongoing development of our forest.

Lastly, I'm committed to enhancing our website and sharing more frequent updates. I invite you to follow our journey through 2024 and beyond, as we rebuild and expand Ocala Food Forest. Your support and interest mean the world to us during this time of renewal.
